Boats may fish out of Cape May or Ocean City, Maryland but all participants must declare when registering which inlet they will sail from during the duration of the tournament. Fishing begins on Monday, August 18 and ends on Friday, August 22 and the tournament’s captain’s choice format allows boats to select three of those five days to fish. All boats must fish within 125 miles of the Cape May Sea Buoy regardless of which inlet they choose to sail from and participants may not pass their respective inlet’s sea buoy prior to 4:30 a.m. on each fishing day. Lines cannot be placed in the water before 8:30 a.m. and fishing ends at 3:30 p.m. in this trolling only event. Canyon Club Resort Marina and Sunset Marina will each provide full weigh-in for all species and scales open at 5 p.m. and close at 9 p.m. each evening. Please note the Mid-Atlantic $500,000 is a private event and is not open to the general public. Tournament credentials are required for access to any tournament-related facilities, activities and social events.

A minimum cash payout of tournament proceeds of $500,000 is insured with a field of at least 125 boats and calcutta pools could push the total payout to close to $2 million! While some tournaments offer a large payout that’s weighted for a single fish or species, Mid-Atlantic $500,000 offers a unique prize structure that awards substantial payouts for the three heaviest white marlin, blue marlin and tuna while dolphin and wahoo also are

The three heaviest white marlin and blue marlin earn $100,000, $50,000 and $25,000 respectively while the top three tuna are worth $75,000, $35,000 and $20,000. After a year of intensive development, the company has announced that it will be implementing a unique Polymer, named Delnaeco for its LED housing units to replace the Aluminium Bronze currently used.

Aluminium Bronze has always been used by OceanLED for its housing units. Although an expensive choice, it’s one of the most robust metals when used underwater, and is renowned for having a great resilience to salt water corrosion as well as having thermal characteristics to help keep the light and LEDs cool.

For the past year, OceanLED has been working with a Swiss based, advanced Polymer specialist, to develop Delnaeco. Plastic has always been deemed as the ultimate material to use for an underwater light, but problems such as durability, flammability, scratch resistance, chemical resistance, thermal conductivity and optical clarity have prevented it from being suitable. The Delnaeco Polymer is 1.5 times stronger than Polycarbonate, V0 rated for flammability, almost 100% optically perfect, resistant to all known solvents and adhesives and most importantly thermally conductive.

The custom creation, a 40 Outlaw dubbed Split Decision, was powered by twin Mercury Racing HP700SCi engines and featured a stellar one-of-a-kind paint job from Kustom Kolors. The V-bottom, which will tour the country this year behind a custom Chevrolet Kodiak truck painted to match the boat, was loaded with blue and red LED lighting from the gauges to the engine compartment.

Some of the boat’s custom touches included underwater lighting from Ocean LED, a complete sound system from JL Audio and Clarion, McLeod IV bolsters and tons of billet hardware. Even the graphics were carried over onto the dash, into the cabin and on the faces for the gauges.

“We can’t wait to see Split Decision get out on the water and hear reactions from the community of Baja owners,” said Barbara Grobicki, Baja’s director of marketing.

Baja also debuted its Hammer-X, a 22-foot sport boat with roadster-like styling. The boat featured specially crafted rear vents, a low-profile stance, seating for six in the cockpit and a cozy cabin with a V-berth.

The bottom line reason we have a boat is to have fun, so this month I want to review a product that literally radiates fun.
Most of the time my job is solving some problem with fuel or AC cooling, but now and then I do get to do something different. Recently, Marsh Marine was asked to install underwater lights on a SeaRay Sundancer transom. My customer’s criteria were quality and performance. As I set about doing my product research, it came as a bit of a surprise to me to discover there were a number of varieties of underwater lights, each with different properties. Having waded through the process of selecting the right product for my client, I thought an article about underwater lights might be a beneficial time saver to readers.
Before you dismiss the idea of underwater lighting as a frivolity, do yourself a favor and read on. My first inclination about underwater lights was that they were merely a novelty too, but by the time I’d completed the installation and witnessed these lights in action, I became a pleased supporter whose opinion had changed 180 degrees. Of all the devices I’ve installed on boats over my 40 plus years in the marine business, nothing has given me such pleasure and pure fun than seeing these lights do their thing at night.
Before I get too far ahead of my story, let’s begin by sorting out how underwater lights are used and the types available. As you might first conclude, these lights add effect to the water surrounding a boat, much like a pool light adds ambiance to your yard. For those of you who need more practical benefits, they make a most dramatic way to locate a vessel in trouble from aloft. For you fishing guys, they attract bait fish like you would not believe! Fish are drawn to the light like steel to a magnet. At anchor with these lights on, it is both entertaining and awesome to view the scene in what amounts to a private aquarium right off your stern. Sit back with a cool one and soak up what boating is supposed to be all about...fun!
There are basically four types of underwater lights: Halogen, Xenon, HID, and LED. Halogen is the least bright, Xenon is the next step up and HID bulbs are the brightest of the three, all have been around for at least 50 years and suffer from major faults. They use too much electricity (amps) and produce significant heat and therefore pose potential hazards. In the case of Xenon and HID bulbs, they will lose, on average, 50% of their light output by the time they have reached half of their life. Just for life expectancy alone, compare: Halogen lights have a life of approximately 500 to 1,000 hours; Xenon has some 1,000 to 3,000 hours; and HIDs have about 3,000 to 5,000 hours if you use them in optimal conditions, which we all know you don’t have on a boat! LEDs are the light bulb of the future, here today. Take a look at car tail lights and most traffic signals. All are moving to LEDs. The new Audi A8 will be the first road car to have LEDs as headlights this year and Volkswagen, Porsche and Lamborghini are to follow suit! It would seem the move in technology will be similar to the television revolution from tube to LCD and plasma. The far and away leader in marine underwater lighting is OceanLED, an international company with its U.S. distribution center located in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. OceanLED lights will last 40,000 to 60,000 hours! Heck, you could run the things constantly, 24/7, for more time than most people will own their boat! Depending on the vessel’s size and the light model, these lights can be mounted anywhere beneath the waterline from 6 inches to 600 feet if needed!! Spacing between lights is a matter of preference and budget! Larger yachts often have them every few feet completely around the vessel. Smaller to mid-sized boats generally have two or better still, three or four of them across the stern. OceanLED offers colors of white, blue, and green. In clear waters like those of Florida or the Keys, white is best with blue a good second choice. For more opaque waters like those of Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina, blue followed by green works best. In areas such as the Great Lakes the best color seems to be green as the color doesn’t get washed out by the murky water. The quality of OceanLED’s products is impeccable and installing these lights is relatively easy. OceanLED offers several light sizes, mounting options, and materials. I prefer their Thru-Hull models which are made of heavy bronze and require only a small one inch hole. Electrical connections are made using supplied waterproof, snap together plugs which integrate into a transformer which OceanLED calls a Driver. This unit is in turn connected to a fused, switched power supply generally located on the dash panel. These Drivers are available in 12 & 24 volt DC or 110 volt AC. Since they are kept cool by the surrounding water, all their lights have a built in automatic overheat cutoff which protects the light should any condition occur which might cause them to overheat. This clever safety simply shuts off the light until the proper temperature is restored which makes them the ONLY lights on the market you can safely leave on when the boat is running. OceanLED initially tried four connector productss between the LED light to the driver box, but after several tests, these failed to provide adequate sealing. It wasn’t until OceanLED started to fit the Quick Connect connectors from Deutsch’s waterproof range that they found the perfect seal.

Mitchell and his teammates – Richard Ebersold, Richard Stockwell, Sean Cassidy and Dan Baummier, all of Port St. Lucie, Fla. – are now headed to the $275,000 FLW Kingfish Series Championship and $500,000 Wal-Mart FLW Kingfish Tour Championship, where the nation’s best kingfish teams will compete for top awards of $70,000 and $150,000, respectively.

Team Bandit captured the Team of the Year title with 426 out of a possible 500 points thanks to a 13th-place finish at the season opener in Fort Pierce, Fla., a sixth-place finish at stop No. 2, also in Fort Pierce, and an eighth-place showing at the third and final stop of the year in Brunswick.

“It’s really awesome to win this,” Mitchell said. “In the past, I have fished a lot of SKA (Southern Kingfish Association) events and been highly ranked in them, but I was truly impressed with the way FLW hosts events.

“Our plans for next year are to get even more involved with FLW. We are going to fish the East Florida Division of the series again as well as all the stops on the Kingfish Tour. We have never won a regular-season event, but we would really like to win one of these championships. It’s more important to me to win a championship than a regular season event. We are going to show up with guns blazing at both of them and hope for the best.”

Mitchell’s team will face the top three teams from each of the 15 FLW Kingfish Series tournaments held in 2007 plus the top 16 teams from each division in the points standings from each of the five FLW Kingfish Series divisions during the three-day, no-entry-fee FLW Kingfish Series Championship in Orange Beach, Ala., Oct. 4-6. The stunning new Azimut 103s, due to set sail to the Maldives has been fitted with 16 OceanLED Flush Mount underwater lights by ART Marine in Dubai.

The new Azimut has an array of lights around the transom and up the sides but the real unique aspect to the installation is the positioning of the underwater lights on port and starboard under the master cabin windows. Looking out at night on to a sea illuminated by LED underwater lights is a sight to behold.

All OceanLED lights have passed the ABYC H-27 test proceedures (Side loading).

The requirements for this effort are to perform a mechanical strength test of the light assemblies per ABYC H-27 to determine if the assembly will withstand a 500- pound static force applied for 30 seconds to the inboard end of its connection fitting without failure of the fitting assembly. The load is to be applied in the most vunerable direction.

The thru-hull light assemblies were mounted on a 3/4" thick simulated boat hull section with the supplied mounting hardware to hold the assemblies in place. A load of 500 lbs. was applied to the inboard end with each assembly mounted securely on the simulated hull section.

All models submitted passed.

Yet another approval signifying the quality and durability of the most advanced underwater lighting available today.

OceanLED are awarded USCG Ignition Protection

Underwater lighting leaders OceanLED have been awarded USCG Ignition Protection on their complete range of standard underwater lights.

Having recently obtained RINA and ABS approvals, this now places OceanLED as one of the most approved marine lighting manufacturers in the industry. This certification allows OEM's complete piece of mind when installing lights in areas such as engines rooms and around fuel tanks. As the lights are a solid piece construction (i.e. no removable parts) the lights excelled in all tests and one striking detail highlighted was the low heat output from the light fitting compared to traditional bulb styled underwater lights.

Nigel Savage, founder and Managing Director says he always knew the lights were the safest available and its good to have an NMMA approval to back it up.

The procedures used to accomplish the Ignition Protection tests are ISO 8846, SAE J1171 and the USCG recommended procedures entitled "USCG Electrical System Standard Test Procedure".These procedures are acceptable to the European Community and the United States Coast Guard respectively for establishing conformance to the ignition protection requirements.

The Spiced Rum III is a Contender outfitted with OceanLED Super Blue 2010TH lights out the transom and our Super Blue and Super Green Fish Strobes. Fish Strobes can be used at night to draw bait and gamefish as well as during the day to create what appear to be very strong and deep penetrating reflections off of trolled or drifted baits.

OceanLED exhibits its innovative LED products at the Light Middle East trade show, at the World Trade Centre, May 13th - 15th.

OceanLED has taken a bold step into the architectural market by exhibiting at one of the largest lighting events of the year. With a massive surge in architectural development in the area, lighting is an area being hotly looked at. OceanLED receives full RINA approval for their lights.

With the new Italian distributorship now in place with Deckmarine, this approval once again marks OceanLED as a quality underwater marine product.

OceanLED was proud to supply the first 37 meter Sunseeker Superyacht, Snapper.

The Snapper is the largest and most ambitious build in Sunseeker’s history. The new 37 Metre is the largest semi-custom production motoryacht ever to be built in the UK, at just under 124 feet and 200 tonnes.

Deck Marine è lieta di annunciare di aver raggiunto un accordo per la distribuzione dei prodotti OceanLed in Italia.
OceanLED è stata fondata nel Dicembre 2004 da Nigel e Lee Savage per progettare e sviluppare luci a LED per la nautica, in particolare luci subacquee per illuminare lo specchio d’acqua intorno alla barca. La società ha un team altamente qualificato per sfruttare al meglio la tecnologia LED e l’elettronica per gestirla.


Perché i LED ?
“Gli esperti pensano che i LED siano destinati a diventare a breve la principale sorgente luminosa per quasi tutta l’illuminazione. Le lampadine ad incandescenza hanno i giorni contati. Finiranno in un museo, come le valvole usate un tempo nell’elettronica, nelle radio e nelle televisioni”
“Quando i LED furono inventati, circa 40 anni fa, trovarono applicazione in prodotti di nicchia e poi, con l’aumento della luminosità, vennero utilizzati per display, cartelli luminosi ed indicatori per il traffico. Attualmente le luci a LED vengono utilizzate anche per uso residenziale e sono sempre più diffuse grazie ai numerosi vantaggi offerti rispetto alle lampadine tradizionali. Prima di tutto durano molto di più: parliamo di una decina di anni contro alcuni mesi. Poi occupano meno spazio (tipicamente un LED ha la dimensione della gomma di una matita), sono resistenti agli shock e, forse più importante di tutto, sono estremamente efficienti dal punto di viste energetico.” Estratto da The Economist Newspaper.

Risparmio energetico
La vita di una lampadina ad incandescenza è estremamente più breve di un LED (i LED utilizzati da OceanLed mantengono la stessa luminosità per oltre 40.000 ore, quindi, se fossero utilizzati tutte le notti per otto ore, durerebbero oltre 13 anni). Non sottovalutate quindi i costi di manutenzione di una lampadina tradizionale. Grazie alla maggiore efficienza luminosa con un nostro LED si riduce del 300% il consumo di corrente rispetto ad esempio ad una lampadina alogena.

Sicurezza
Non necessitando di manutenzione, le nostre luci a LED sono completamente sigillate e totalmente stagne, incluse le parti elettroniche e i connettori.


I LED sono una tecnologia testata ?
OceanLed ha installato negli ultimi due anni oltre 4000 luci a LED sui più prestigiosi yacht esistenti al mondo.

Più in generale negli Stati Uniti oltre 1 milione di semafori sono stati trasformati dalla tecnologia tradizionale ai LED con un risparmio energetico e di manutenzione. Solo a New York la bolletta per i semafori (20M$) si è immediatamente ridotta del 90% !!

Lexus e Audi stanno introducendo su alcuni modelli 2007 le luci a LED.

Come si possono confrontare le luci OceanLed con altre luci subacquee.
Dobbiamo tener conto di quattro principali parametri: la luminosità reale, l’ottica, la temperatura del colore e la durata.

La luminosità reale
Molte società che producono luci subacquee misurano la luminosità in Lumens, nonostante il Lumens misuri la luminosità alla fonte e può perdere anche il 60% attraversando le lenti che compongono la luce stessa. OceanLed fa riferimento ai Lux, che misurano la luminosità su una data superficie ad una distanza prefissata dalla fonte luminosa, valutando così la luminosità reale.
Misurando quindi l’efficienza delle luci in lux/watt, le luci OceanLed sono molto più efficienti della concorrenza e, a parità di Lux, utilizzano molto meno energia.

L’ottica
Le luci OceanLed catturano la luce emessa dai LED e, tramite prismi ottici, amplificano la luce e focalizzano il fascio luminoso (un po’ come funziona nei fari dove una lampadina di soli 150W può essere vista a 20 miglia di distanza). Viceversa in una lampada tradizionale la luce si disperde a 360° per poi essere catturata da un riflettore per poi rifrangersi attraverso una lente, con perdite che possono arrivare fino al 60%.

La temperatura del colore
La temperatura del colore è misurata in Gradi Kelvin. Più alta è la temperatura, più bianca è la luce. In una giornata estiva di sole a mezzogiorno con il cielo terso si hanno circa 12.000 gradi Kelvin. Tutte le luci OceanLED, dalla più piccola alla più potente, raggiungono i 10.000 gradi Kelvin. I migliori prodotti concorrenti sul mercato non superano i 7000 gradi Kelvin. Più la luce è bianca, migliore è l’effetto nell’acqua.

Durata
Le lampade tradizionali hanno un forte decadimento già dopo un migliaio di ore di utilizzo. Le luci OceanLED hanno una vita praticamente infinita (>40.000 ore) e non risentono del numero di accensioni/spegnimenti a cui vengono sottoposte, a differenza delle luci alogene la cui durata diminuisce sensibilmente se vengono utilizzate “ad intermittenza”.


Le luci OceanLED si scaldano molto ?
I LED utilizzati nelle luci OceanLED lavorano massimo al 50% della temperatura raccomandata, anche per garantirne la longevità.
Nelle luci del tipo Flush Mount, la parte interna allo scafo, se ben ventilata, raggiunge una temperatura tra i 30° e i 42°. Nelle versioni Thru Hull e Surface Mount, il corpo della luce è 3-4° più caldo dell’acqua in cui è immerso, e il calore non viene trasmesso all’interno dello scafo.
Esiste comunque una protezione contro le sovra-temperature come estrema precauzione di sicurezza.


Le luci OceanLed sono approvate ?
Le luci OceanLED hanno superato i severissimi test sia dei Lloyds che del Rina.


Che tipo di connettori utilizza OceanLED ?
Tutte le luci Ocean LED utilizzano connettori Plug&Play prodotti dalla rinomata Deutsch. Questi connettori sono stagni IP68 e soddisfano gli standard di riferimento.


Che tipo di lenti utilizza OceanLED ?
Per le lenti delle proprie luci OceanLED si appoggia a Tritonium Optical Technologies, un laboratorio di ricerca inglese specializzato nelle forniture militari ed aeronautiche.
Tre sono i problemi principali delle lenti per luci subacquee: la chiarezza, la robustezza e la contaminazione da parte degli organismi marini.

Chiarezza
Le lenti utilizzate da OcenLED sono praticamente otticamente perfette e trasmettono il 30% di luce in più rispetto ad una lente tradizionale.

Robustezza
Poiché le luci OceanLED non scaldano molto, non è necessario analizzare nel dettaglio la resistenza al calore. Mentre i test effettuati dai Lloyds e dal Rina dimostrano la robustezza di queste lenti all’impatto.

Contaminazione organismi marini
Come evitare che gli organismi marini si aggrappino alla lente ? Come evitare che per togliere le alghe o i denti di cane si debba raschiare anche la lente ? Le lenti utilizzate da OceanLED sono trattate con una resina anti-fungo che forma uno strato chimico in grado di ridurre drasticamente la formazione di alghe o denti di cane e comunque ne garantisce la facile rimozione senza utilizzo di prodotti graffianti.
Alcune luci subacquee per evitare la formazione dei denti di cane puntano sulla elevata temperatura della lente che uccide la vegetazione attaccata sulla superficie. Ma, non utilizzando la luce per un certo periodo, questo sistema perde di efficacia, viceversa accendendo le luci regolarmente, ne riduco drasticamente la vita utile.
Le luci OceanLED sono dotate di un disco di protezione da rimuovere dopo aver dato l’antivegetativa alla scafo.


Accendere e spegnere le luci OceanLED ne riduce la durata ?
E’possibile spegnere e riaccendere le luci migliaia di volte senza alcun effetto sui LED. Inoltre le luci OceanLED non hanno tempo di riscaldamento né picchi di potenza richiesti al momento dell’accensione, al contrario delle luci HID (High Intensity Discharge, luci ad alta intensità di scarica) che impiegano almeno 2 minuti per raggiungere la massima luminosità e, se spente, necessitano di 20 minuti per raffreddarsi e riavviarsi. Questa caratteristica costituisce un grande vantaggio quando il sistema di illuminazione viene integrato con un sistema di sicurezza di bordo.


A che voltaggio funzionano le luci OceanLED ?
Le luci standard funzionano in corrente continua a 12 o a 24 V. Sono oggi disponibili anche i driver funzionanti in corrente alternata a 110/220V da utilizzare con generatori di corrente montati a bordo. Inoltre è possibile montare il nuovo SuperYacht Cabinet che permette di raggruppare tutti i collegamenti elettrici in un’unica area dell’imbarcazione, da dove poi partono i cablaggi per tutte le luci. In questo modo si velocizza l’installazione e si semplifica l’ispezione periodica.


Quante luci sono necessarie?
La scelta del numero e della posizione delle luci dipende dalla dimensione della barca e dall’effetto desiderato. Le serie 1520 e 2010 sono le più utilizzate per il rapporto prezzo/potenza. Per maggiori dettagli è consigliabile contattare un rivenditore OceanLED.


Qual’è il colore migliore?
La luce blu ha una lunghezza d’onda minore rispetto alla luce bianca, e può quindi penetrare maggiormente attraverso l’acqua. Per questo le nostre luci Super Blue LEDs si vendono più delle luci Super White.
Il bianco delle luci OceanLed è più bianco di qualsiasi altra luce disponibile sul mercato, che appare al confronto di un colore giallastro.


Qual’è la misura/serie migliore per la mia barca?
Per le barche grandi servono luci grandi, per le piccole le luci grandi sono superflue. Sarà a breve disponibile una tabella per aiutare il cliente nella scelta delle luci; alcune semplici indicazioni:
- X-520 per barche piccole, fino a 9mt;
- Serie 1520 per barche fino a 13mt senza plancetta;
- Serie 2010 per barche fino a 21 mt;
- Serie 3010 per barche oltre i 21 mt;
- Serie 4010 per chi desidera la luce più brillante disponibile sul mercato.


Quali tipi di lenti sono disponibili?
Tutte le sono fornite con una lente standard che genera un fascio di circa 50°di ampiezza. Sono comunque disponibili delle lenti con effetto diffusore che generano un fascio di circa 140° di ampiezza e creano un effetto alone attorno allo scafo della barca.
